7 Ways to Start your Year Right!

Colleges are reopening, and it’s time to pull out the backpacks and formal clothes again. Whether you’re in your first year or your final, these tips will help you prepare for your new year!

1. Update your music collection

For all the lonely traveling time, quiet moments between classes, and the loud moments with your gang, your music collection will be your best buddy. Carry your music on your phone. If you have a wide range of tastes, get an SD Card to carry the weight of your music collection, or choose a phone with great storage. You can also install apps like Google Play Music, Gaana, Saavn, Soundcloud, and even Youtube to stream or download your favourite songs, especially if you enjoy a good data pack. Network providers such as Airtel and Vodafone also offer great free music. Don’t forget a good set of sturdy headphones to last all year! Headsets have great audio quality, but in-ear headphones are less bulky, especially when they come with soft buds for maximum comfort. Always pick the type that best matches your needs.

2. Set up a schedule

Plan out every day’s schedule - make sure you set reminders so that you never forget your timetable, class schedule,  college events, practices, assignments and submissions.  Google Calendar can help you sync your schedule across all the devices you own. Planning ahead will also help you decide which days you can bunk without risking your grades or attendance!

3. Snap out of Vacation mode

A new year has begun, and you need to get your head back in the game. If your course is hectic, skimming through old question papers and the previous semester’s notes might be helpful. Get help from your seniors and skim their notes as well, if you want to stay a step ahead of your class. But most importantly, make sure you and your gang figure out a great way to show in the new year!

4. Format and Backup your laptop

Give yourself a fresh start! Before you format your laptop, remember to copy all your important files to a pendrive or portable hard disk. Also backup the apps and programs you will need to reinstall. Give yourself a day to setup the formatted laptop. If it requires any kind of servicing, get it done before the year begins to avoid crashes and data loss during the year. Weekly file backups are also a good idea, and it’s best to set this up with either Google rive or an external hard disk so you don’t risk losing any data in case of a system crash. Don’t forget to reinstall your anti-virus, too!

5. Start on a fresh page

Carry a fresh notebook for the new year/semester. This is a psychological aid that helps you shed the stress of the previous semester and give yourself a fresh outlook and focus. If you work on a computer, start a fresh folder for each subject, with sub-folders to sort your files by subject. Organizing is the key to success!

6. Get a reliable Internet connection

Your phone’s data pack might be your best friend, but other options include a dongle or a portable hotspot. This is doubly essential if you live at a hostel with poor WiFi. Your data will reduce your dependency on your home/college’s internet connection, and ensure you can do last-minute research for your projects even on the go. As a bonus, you won’t have to depend on a fragile shared connection when you watch shows or videos online!

7. Begin the day with a smile!

Once you’re on campus, it’s natural to feel a bit sad that the holidays are done. But the secret to fixing this is simple - just smile! Smile and greet everyone you see on your way to class. Smile at those annoying people who hate you, and those teachers who make your life miserable. If you’re too shy for that, just smile at the people you know. You’ll brighten up not just your own day, but also someone else’s!

Now that you’ve read our tips, do you think you’re college-ready?

Good Luck!

Electronics Maintenance Tips from the Experts

Electronics vary in size, purpose and specifications, but they all need good maintenance to ensure that they last long and work efficiently. Further, failure to maintain electronics can lead to potentially dangerous circumstances. Here are a few tips to maintain the electronics in your home:

Television:

Treat your television screen the way you’d treat sunglasses. They can get scratched or smudged just as easily as your average lens. Cleaning or dusting the the screen using rough cloth often makes matters worse. Always use a soft cloth to wipe dust. You can add some very mild dish soap if the intent is to rid it of smudges, but lens cleaning fluid is an even better alternative. A good branded stabiliser will also protect your tv from damage due to voltage fluctuations.

Air Conditioners:

Neglecting maintenance of an Air Conditioning Unit’s Filter, coils and fins could lead to a rapid decline in performance, resulting in poor filtration and decreased effectiveness. Most air conditioners have easy-to-access filters that can be pulled out, dusted, and replaced on a monthly basis. Always use and inverter to protect your air conditioner from power surges as well. Like the TV, ACs need stabilisers, too. For best results, have the gases replaced every on an annual basis by the authorised service center.

Fans:

Dirt and dust on your fans leads to a restricted air flow. Further, this becomes a great place for dustmites to accumulate and spread into the room, causing breathing problems and allergies. A periodic dusting and wipe-down would result in the circulation of far cleaner and healthier air.

Refrigerators:

There must always be a 1ft breathing space between the refrigerator and the wall. A good stabiliser is a priority, as it will protect the volatile circuits from voltage fluctuations. Make sure the seals on the refrigerator doors are airtight so that the cool air doesn’t escape the fridge. An unopened refrigerator can keep food cold for upto 4 hours even when there is no power.

Smartphones:

The importance of smartphones in our daily life can not be overstated. They maximise productivity and simplify life to a large extent. An external case and screen guard are advisable to protect your device from physical damage. Disabling haptic feedback, typing sounds, and auto-brightness are also great ways to boost the speed of your device. Periodically clearing the phone’s memory will also maximise its performance. WiFi and Data connections can be turned off during sleeping hours. It is also generally advisable to turn off the phone for upto two hours a day to prevent overheating and increase its life. It is also generally not recommended to install apps from third party sources. It is generally recommended to charge the phone only once the battery level is below 20% for better battery life.

Laptops:

Like smartphones, laptops are portable computers that make us more productive. Occasionally dusting the screen and the gaps between the keys with a soft cloth will maintain the device’s body. Installing anti-viruses and clearing the memory boosts the laptop’s performance. The temp folder needs to be cleared periodically as well to improves speed. Always shut down the device if it is not going to be used for a period of more than 3 hours, and set your screen on low brightness to reduce damage to your eye. A keyboard skin and sleeve are recommended to protect the laptop from dust and accidental liquid spillage. Additionally, it is recommended to clean the DVD drive on a monthly basis to keep it in optimal condition.

Additionally, the general rule while storing electronics is to put them in the same boxes they were delivered in. If the original packing is unavailable, a sufficiently sized cardboard box or large plastic sheet are good alternatives. Consult the product manuals for further information specific to your model and brand. It is always advisable to consult a certified technician for other routine maintenance and repairs.

7 Reasons to upgrade to the new Redmi Note 5

Upgrading Your Smartphone?

Here are 7 reasons to pick the new Redmi Note 5!

Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 5 released in February this year. It is the latest in its series and the
predecessor of the explosively successful Note 4. A high-performance smartphone, it offers some
of the best features in the market at an affordable price. Here’s what you need to know before you
upgrade.

Knight in shining steel and Gorilla Glass:

The phone has a solid metal outer casing and is available in 5 colour variants. At just 180 g,
the device is light, portable, and sleek. It comes with a fingerprint scanner for maximum security with
easy access. The screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass.

More space for what matters:

Bezels are the spaces above and below the touch area of the smartphone. The Note 5 has extremel
y narrow bezels when compared to its predecessors. This allows for a large 5.99-inch screen with
a pixel density of 403 pixels per inch, leading to a much sharper display.

Gamers, take Note:

Redmi Note 5 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 Octa-core processor that clocks at 2GHz, making it ideal for multi-taskers and allowing a smooth gaming experience with minimal device
heating, even with games like PUBG, Asphalt, and GTA. This is backed by 4 GB RAM and an
Android v7.1.2 operating system. Xiaomi also promises that an Android v8.1 update is on the horizon.

Carry your world in your pocket:

The Redmi Note 5 has a full-HD 1080x2160px display, turning video-viewing into a luxurious
experience. The 64 GB internal memory lets the user carry and watch a large number of movies,
shows and videos on the go! This is further expandable up to 128 GB with a MicroSD card.

Quick Charge to the rescue!

The Note 5’s built-in 4000 mAh battery is compatible with Quick Charge 3.0, making life easier
with faster, cooler and far more efficient charging. Xiaomi promises 17 days of standby time and
up to 9 hours of gaming time as well.

Low light? No problem!

The device’s 12MP rear camera captures high detail and works well even in low lighting. The HDR
feature enhances the dynamic range of captured images and recovers details from highlights and
shadows. The 5MP front camera is accompanied by a front-facing Soft-LED flash that provides the
perfect illumination for selfies in any light. Videos are recorded in high resolution at 30 frames per
second, with 4K, 1080p, and 720p options.

Stay in control:

The Note 5’s IR emitter and Mi Remote turn the smartphone into a universal remote, allowing it
control almost any remote-operated electronic device. This renders all other remote controls
practically redundant.

Redmi Note 5 also packs Bluetooth v4.2, 4G compatibility, and a USB 2.0 port. With a great user
interface and a wide range of features, the device is a smart buy at just ₹11,999!
